Helene Fuld School of Nursing is located within the Blackwood Campus of Camden County College in New Jersey. About 400 students attend the nursing school, which offers graduates not just a Diploma in Nursing but also an Associate Degree in Science through Camden County College.

Helene Fuld School of Nursing takes in close to 200 freshman students yearly for day and evening courses. If you are interested in enrolling in the school, you should complete the application form and prepare your high school and college transcripts if you have attended other colleges before. In addition, you should have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and a minimum grade of C in certain high school subjects such as algebra, chemistry and biology. Applicants would also need to pass a Nurse Entrance Test and Camden County College’s Basic Skills Test.

Applicants who received their education overseas will have to undergo a language skills exam called Test of English as a Foreign Language or TOEFL. Helene Fuld School of Nursing accepts transfer students who meet the requirements for eligibility such as successful completion of required nursing and non-nursing courses.

Students who are seeking financial assistance in their education may apply for Camden County College’s Financial Aid. Contact their office to get information on eligibility and application requirements.

This school received its accreditation from the New Jersey Board of Nursing and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission to provide nursing students the education, skills and training that they need to qualify for the nursing licensure exam and become registered nurses.

Working with other health care institutions such as Virtua Health and the Cooper University Hospital, Helene Fuld School of Nursing offers students education in clinical nursing. The school has developed a comprehensive three-year nursing course program, wherein students learn to make decisions based on critical thinking, apply nursing theories and concepts in practice to provide healthcare to different individuals in the community, and demonstrate strong ethics, professionalism and responsibility.

As a way of encouraging its graduates to continue their education and pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing, Helene Fuld School of Nursing has collaborated with other educational institutions to give credits to graduates who enroll in higher education for courses they have completed at Helene Fuld School of Nursing.

I would like to know if patients are put in certain areas of the nursing home dependent on their insurance ? And also what are the procedures for nursing home patients as far as hygiene ? Are they suppose to be bathed daily if bed ridden ?? Things like that.. Are there laws that nursing homes need to abide by when caring for bedridden patients ?? I live in Wisconsin. Thank you.1. It depends on the home and there's no short answer. If all the beds are dual Medicare/Medicaid certified then for the most part anybody should be able to be in any bed. You can't put the Medicaid residents in the 4 bed rooms and save the private rooms for those paying privately. However some insurance contracts might require that their residents can only be in private rooms, and homes can also have short-stay units that will mostly be Medicare or private insurance because those units can have different staffing requirements.2. Every resident has a plan of care unique to their needs that keeps them clean. For elderly residents you do NOT want to bathe them every day because their skin is so thin and it puts them at higher risk for skin tears and bed sores. If they are incontinent then they need to be cleaned in that area when they are changed but a daily full bath or shower would not be appropriate for the elderly.3. There are no specific laws or rules on how to care for bedridden patients specifically. There are standards of care though that the home needs to follow. The specific needs of the resident is in their plan of care and also reported to the government through something called the MDS. The agencies that monitor nursing homes know what to look for in bedridden residents in the reports that are submitted and when they come out for the annual surveys.If you have concerns about how somebody in a nursing home is being cared for you should contact the home and request to attend care conference. These are held for every resident at least every quarter and at the request of family and resident. All the disciplines are there, nursing, dietary, social workers, etc. If you feel that something is not being addressed you should contact the administrator and then the ombudsman – an independent agency responsible for protecting resident rights.

Mary Harper Wins Belinda E. Puetz Award for Professional Nursing Development

SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Mary G. Harper, Ph.D., RN-BC, Clinical Faculty Coordinator at nonprofit, online Western Governors University, has received the Belinda E. Puetz Award for Nursing Professional Development. Dr. Harper, who leads the clinical faculty for WGU’s innovative B.S. in Nursing Prelicensure Program, was recognized at the annual national convention of the National Nursing Staff Development Organization (NNSDO) held in Chicago in July. The Puetz Award, named after the founder of NNSDO, is the highest national award for the specialty of Nursing Professional Development and recognizes outstanding contributions to the specialty.

Western Governors University’s multistate prelicensure BSN program, one of the university’s several online nursing programs, uses staff nurses to coach nursing students in the clinical setting during clinical intensives. As the Clinical Faculty Coordinator, Dr. Harper teaches staff nurses how to teach students in the clinical setting. She co-authored a manuscript describing this unique academic-service partnership entitled Building An Educational Model that Promotes Competence through Innovation that has been accepted for publication in the NLN Journal, Nursing Education Perspectives.

Dr. Harper has demonstrated leadership in the specialty of Nursing Professional Development (NPD). Certified in NPD, she has served two terms as a Director on the Board of Directors for NNSDO. In addition, she represents NNSDO on the American Nurses Association (ANA) Congress for Nursing Practice and Economics and serves on the Congress’ Workgroup for Education. She was on the task force that revised the NPD Scope and Standards in 2010, co-chairing the subcommittee that revised the model of NPD practice. As a member of this task force, she presented the revisions in the scope and standards to national groups including NNSDO, the National League for Nursing (NLN), and the Professional Nurse Educators Group (PNEG). She also contributed a chapter to the Core Curriculum for Nurses in Staff Development, 3rd Edition and has been named a section editor for the fourth edition. Recently, she was selected as an instructor for the NNSDO NPD Certification Review Course.

Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, interns, physicians, medical technologists, medical assistants,ECG Technicians, Respiratory Therapists and more have had to perform blood draws at one time or another. However, they are not considered phlebotomy technicians. Earning a phlebotomy technician certification requires attending classes at local colleges or proprietary schools. The costs are very steep. The average phlebotomy technician program costs anywhere from one thousand to eleven thousand dollars.

Medical health-care professionals realize that they can do the job of a phlebotomy technician but lack only the certification. The thought of spending thousands of dollars on a course which they already have experience in seems like a waste of time and money. This is the dilemma that medical health-care professionals face daily when competing with phlebotomy technicians for phlebotomy related positions.

Employers of health-care workers will hire a phlebotomy technician before a hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse or medical assistant because the phlebotomy technician has a certificate. Although the Licensed Practical Nurse and medical assistant can both do the job of the phlebotomy technician, they lack the certification. In Michigan, there is now a nursing hiring freeze. There are too many graduate nurses who do not possess the experience to find work. They too have no specialization that will allow them to compete with phlebotomy technicians.

Everyone needs that edge that will set them apart from the rest. Employers would be more inclined to hire a licensed practical nurse or medical assistant who possessed a certification as a phlebotomy technician. The employer recognizes that the medical assistant and licensed practical nurse can multitask while being proficient in phlebotomy. Medical assistants are always drawing blood. Phlebotomy is part of their curriculum. However, medical assistants are not considered phlebotomy technicians. Employers are very specific as to the professional certification that is required for the job.

Now more than ever, employers such as hospitals, doctors offices, out-patient labs and nursing homes require medical health-care workers to perform blood draws. They are going so far as to hire phlebotomy technicians to train their employees. This wouldn't be the case if their employees were already certified as a phlebotomy technician.

Professor Nancy Kimmel, Registered Nurse, PhD and Certified Phlebotomy Instructor at Phlebotomy Career Training School, realized the importance of offering affordable online accelerated phlebotomy certification to those with previous experience in phlebotomy.

Once students complete the class they are required to take a final exam. Upon passing the final, Professor Kimmel will then send to them their Michigan Certificate for Phlebotomy Technician.

Professor Kimmel's school is also certified by the National Healthcareer Association. Therefore, once student's pass their final exam they can also sit for their National Phlebotomy Certification exam. The National Healthcareer Association is the benchmark for accreditation of phlebotomy certification. Students not present in the state of Michigan will still be able to take the online course and receive not only certification from the state of Michigan but nationwide.

I want to apply for the nursing program when I am done with my last prerequisite. (adn program) I was wondering if it would be a good idea to work as a nursing assistant while in the program (once I am accepted). Do I have to be certified first? Is it labor intensive? I know each state pays differently, but is the pay decent?It may help you get in if you for it before you are in the program. Some require it; you would have to check with them. Once you are in the program you may have a lot of trouble trying to hold down a job, nursing is intense. It is very good experience for building up confidence and getting used to the yucky stuff, but if you are already in the program I think it may just be a waste of time.You have to be certified to work in a long term care facility (nursing home), and it is preferred for other areas. I think that a certain amount of time in a nursing program may count, but I am not sure.It does involve a lot of physical labor. I work in a nursing home and I am expected to be able to lift up to 50 pounds. You have mechanical lifts for some people, but you still need to assist people that are partially weight bearing and roll/ boost people in bed. You will have to do this as a nurse too, though not quite as much. Its also kind of gross, your job is to wash, toilet, and feed people that can't do it themselves. I have been peed on, and I had a friend get a mouthful or pureed food gets spit in her face. Again, you will need to do some of this in nursing school, not as much but you still need to be able to tolerate it. If there is any question of you being able to handle it, this is a good way to break yourself into it.The pay is very good for the training, still not that much.
